Dispute at Columbia College has some instructors complaining (via WBEZ)

Across the country, many colleges are turning to adjunct faculty to supplement their existing tenured staff. As their numbers increase, many are pushing for these educators to form unions.Elgin college could face faculty strike (via Chicago Tribune)
Elgin Community College faculty have given themselves the option of going on strike in 10 days. (Editor’s Note: Of interest is that FT and PT faculty are covered under the same contract at ECC.)

The 2010-2011 Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Award winner, and member of CODAA, is Dr. Scott Lingenfelter.
Dr. Lingenfelter holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Illinois-Chicago, with an area of specialization in 20th century Russian and Chinese History. Since joining College of DuPage in fall 2000, Scott has taught a broad range of courses, including Western Civilization, U.S. History, History and Culture of Russia, History and Culture of China, and 20th Century World History. He has also been a leader in online education and has taught and helped design online courses at College of DuPage and elsewhere. As a teacher, Scott endeavors to help students along the path of self-discovery, helping them discover their unique gifts and abilities and their potential to make a positive contribution to the world in which they live. For Scott, the study of history enables students to develop a unique perspective on other cultures by allowing them to view the complexity of forces which molds peoples. In nominating Scott for this award, students speak highly of his accessibility, his willingness to provide guidance and support, and his passion for history as a means of understanding the world and their purpose in it. Scott has been an active participant in the History program’s Carter Carroll Excellence in History Awards celebration which recognizes outstanding student writing in the field of History. As a scholar of Russian History, Scott has several noteworthy publications to his credit. Most recently, he presented a paper titled “Irreverent Icon: Sergei Bulgakov and the Russian Orthodox Social Mission in Contemporary Russia” at the International Conference on Religion and Spirituality in Society. He is a member of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies and the Association for the Study of Eastern Christian History and Culture. Scott is an active member of the Christ Church of Oak Brook where he has developed and taught courses on church history and American religious life.
